By Davy Trengove – Boxing is a short career for most and also a very dangerous sport in which can be risk and reward. Sometimes the risk can far outweigh the reward.
In recent weeks another fighter lost their life: R.I.P Patrick Day. We also saw another top fighter forced to retire due to injury at only 27 in Ryan Burnett.
Nigel Benn is one of my favourite boxers of all time and one of the reasons I got into boxing and personally i’m glad his comeback fight has been cancelled for his health and his faculties are still intact.
Call me selfish but everything happens for a reason. Nigel has nothing to prove and his legacy is fantastic in the sport. At 55 and after a 23 year ring absence there’s no way he should’ve been allowed to fight the dangerous Sakio Bika.
It’s a blessing in disguise as I’d rather see Nigel be in a similar position to Burnett and be forced to retire than be in a similar position to that of the ill fated Patrick Day.
Day had his life in front of him and his sad passing is a stark reminder of how dangerous the fight game is.
Time for Benn to pass on the baton to his Sons and enjoy the rest of his days with family to which I’m sure he will.
