Being the son of a world title winning father can be a daunting prospect for someone looking to emulate those achievements, we see the likes of Chris Eubank Jr and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr struggle with expectation but one who seems to strive on the added pressure is Cardiff’s Jacob Robinson.

NameJacob Robinson
Birth Date12/08/94
NicknameBaby Jake
Birth PlaceCardiff, Wales

“To be honest I don’t look at it in that way” Robinson said when asked about the pressure “what my dad achieved was amazing, like I get people coming up to me saying ‘Steve Robinson’s your dad’ it’s a great thing but now he’s my trainer and been there since day one, we got a special relationship together and his knowledge you can’t buy it”

The inclusion of his father is a vital one which is further helped by his signing with the management company MTK Global who since his introduction have remained on the scent of the talented fighter, recently adding him to their already stacked division of fighters that includes the likes of Tyson Fury, Carl Frampton, Billy Joe Saunders and TJ Doheny amongst many others.

“MTK are doing big things at the moment” said Robinson “you also get a lot of exposure and what they offered was good, like for this year they got three shows in Cardiff after this fight so I be looking for titles very soon”

Having taken influence from the likes of Pernell Whitaker, Guillermo Rigondeaux as well as his always present father, his immediate focus is capturing domestic titles that mirrors the well grounded fighter.

“My goal is to be British champion anything after that is a bonus to me”

There is however the sticking point of getting past Johnny Philips before any such fights can come to conclusion.

Philips comes into Friday’s contest on the back of a four fight unbeaten streak after his only loss in his second professional encounter. Last time out Russ Midgley was the victim of a stoppage loss to Philips as he will no doubt be travelling to Cardiff with confidence.

The fight represents a step up for both men, a litmus test to gauge each man’s future but one which is relished by Robinson.

“I had a little look at Phillips but I leave all that to my coach’s, I know come Friday I’m coming away with the victory either if I win on a wide points or the stoppage, personally I’m feeling the stoppage around 5/6”

A self confessed gym-rat Robinson can always be found sharpening the tools of his trade in the boxing gym. Sparring solid opposition in readiness for this fight in particular.

“Sparring been good, I’ve been doing rounds with a few taller and bigger guys like Jason Sillet, Joel Jason and then for my sharpness I been doing a lot of rounds with Andrew Selby which has brought me on another level as did going a few rounds with Lyon Woodstock”

Since his entrance into the professional ranks, a quiet confidence is evident in Jacob Robinson, sure he shares some of the characteristics of his father who is a vital part of the puzzle, the difference between himself and most of the others is that Steve Robinson stays in the shadows allowing his sons skill to do the talking which cannot be understated.
