The Hunger to make it to the top of the mountain can sometime starve the appetite to recapture the feat. Remember It wasn’t that long since Josh Taylor albeit severely underrated for the majority of his career rose to the pinnacle of his career having captured the status of being undisputed in a decision win over Jose Ramirez in 2021.
Since then, a contentious win over Jack Caterall was followed with losses to Teofimo Lopez and a rematch against Caterall giving us the impression that time may have run its course.
It’s difficult to tell or guide a fighter in the direction of retirement but it was a real possibility if unable to get past the challenge of Ekow Essuman at a more comfortable weight class of Welterweight.
Every indication given was that Taylor was ready to put on a show, that this fight would put him back on route to a new weight world title.
Twelve rounds is what it took to get the resounding answer some of us where not looking for.
The Scot started well, hurting the Englishman in the fourth with a solid shot that drove Essuman into the ropes only for the betting underdog to reply with a beauty of a right hand that wobbled Taylor.
The pace thereafter slowed somewhat with a cut appearing on the eye of Taylor courtesy of a clash of heads.
Maybe it was the claret that spurred the Englishman forward or his sheer will to win, it was he that finished the stronger, Taylor slowing to a pace unknown to those of us who have watched his career from its beginning to come out on the losing side of a decision, scores of 116-113, 116-112, and 115-113 all for Essuman read from the judges at ringside, suggestions setting in that we may have seen the last of the Scottish Tornado.
All credit to Essuman who took the biggest scalp of his career to date with eyes now fixated on World title glory.
