By Anthony George – Barclays Center in Brooklyn is the place. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (30-0. 28 KOs) and Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-1, 10 KOs) are the combatants. The stakes? Plenty.
First, Tank’s undefeated record is on the line. For a fighter sprouted from Floyd Mayweather Jr., that O on the right side of the column means everything. There is also a ton of cash to be had. The winner stands to make a ton more in their next fight. The loser is bound to take a pay cut.
In Mayweather’s world, getting the Benjaman’s is just as crucial as maintaining the O. Tank appears to be a carbon copy of Floyd on that front. For Lamont Roach Jr., a victory Saturday night will no doubt lead to the biggest payday of his career.
It would be a payday well earned. Nobody knows this better than Team Roach. I caught up with Lamont Roach Sr., Lamont’s father and trainer, and he stated, “Tank is a great fighter and earned his way to the position he’s in. I have known and watched him since he was a kid, and he has always been a special fighter. Him and my son have history in that ring. They know each other very well and that’s why this fight is going to be great.”
To peel the onion even further, both fighters are riding impressive streaks that they are putting on the line. Aside from Tank’s O, he has stopped his last four opponents, while Roach has had his hand raised in his last six fights. Even more impressive, Lamont Roach Jr. has never been stopped in 27 professional bouts.
Indeed, such numbers have Team Roach beaming with confidence, “Camp was great! Lamont is feeling real good and strong at 135. We took our camp to Plant City, FL and our ProBox family rolled out the red carpet for us. We accomplished a lot of good things, and it will show come March the 1st,” Lamont Sr. said.
135 is another crucial number in this fight. While that weight is not entirely uncharted waters for Lamont, he weighed slightly over 137 for a fight in 2014, he has lived in the 130-pounddivision for the majority of his important fights. To face a killer puncher like Tank in your first championship fight at lightweight is taking ‘Daring to Great’ to the next level.
Team Roach is confident with their decision. Roach Sr. explained, “This is a great opportunity for Lamont Jr to show the world that he is one of the best fighters in the world. No better way to do it with defeating Gervonta Davis! On March 1st you will hear And The New!”
For Mister Roach’s prediction to come to fruition, his son is going to have to be able to handle the power of Davis, the fighter with the best one-punch power in boxing today. If that happens, we will indeed have ourselves a gem of a boxing match. Because there are not many men that can outbox Lamont today. Is Tank one of them? Will he need to? How can we havethese questions answered?
Well, let Lamont Sr. tell you, “Get your tickets now and come out and support a great night of boxing or buy the Amazon PPV!”
