WBO Mini Flyweight champion Oscar Collazo successfully defended his crown against Nicaraguan contender Gerardo Zapata in the main event of Oscar de La Hoya’s Golden Boy show at the Turning Stone Casino, broadcast on DAZN.
It was a slow start but it was the challenger who rocked Collazo with a stunning right hand, sending the champion reeling across the ring.
Regaining his composure, Collazo dominated the third round on, outworking Zapata over the next few rounds. In the eighth round, Zapata either couldn’t or chose not to leave the ropes, allowing Collazo to score effectively, albeit without inflicting serious damage.
This pattern persisted for the subsequent rounds, with Zapata frequently fighting off the ropes in spurts and Collazo doing enough to win the rounds without pressing for a stoppage. The twelfth and final round saw both fighters take turns initiating action before retreating.
In the end, Collazo’s consistent performance earned him a unanimous decision victory with scores of 119-109 twice and 117-110, retaining his title for the third time.
