Ten seconds remained of a seventh round which brought Social media to debate on whether Ben Davison was correct to throw in the white towel of surrender. Regardless if you are pro or against the decision, Featherweight Mauricio “Bronco” Lara (26-2-1, 19 KOs) brought the hometown crowd to a standstill with a sensational one punch stoppage over the now former WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood (26-3, 16 KOs) on Saturday night at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, England.

Wood got off to a good start, clearly ahead going into the fateful seventh round but one punch is all it took to completely change the narrative. Lara exchanged left hooks with the champion with the latter coming off far worse for the action, left looking up at the arena lights from the seat of his pants. It was enough for head trainer Ben Davidson to pre-empt the forthcoming onslaught as he called the fight to an end. Time was 2:54.

“I feel very happy for this championship. It’s what I’ve dreamed of since I was 8 years old,” Lara said. “I definitely felt Leigh’s punches, but they didn’t hurt me. He hits hard and is a good champion.”

Lara when asked of his intentions for the future said, “I want the trilogy fight [with Josh Warrington] and, of course, I want more belts — it’s up to [promoter] Eddie Hearn to make it,” Lara said.

Lara spat at former champion Josh Warrington from ringside whilst the bad blood between the two threatened to spill over in the aftermath.

There is however a rematch clause in the contract which looks to be the immediate path for both men. “I’m a fighter — I’m not going to say anything more,” Wood said “I made a mistake and I paid for it. Absolutely I want the rematch.”

Unbeaten British super lightweight belt holder Dalton Smith (14-0, 10 KOs) scored a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over Billy Allington (10-2-4, 0 KOs) on the undercard. Smith dropped Allington in round eight to punctuate the scores of 120-107, 119-108, 119-108.

Unbeaten lightweight Gary “The Diva” Cully (16-0, 10 KOs) annihilated the previously unbeaten Wilfredo Flores (10-1-1, 5 KOs) in two rounds to win the vacant WBA Intercontinental title. Flores was dropped twice in round two.
