Juan Francisco Estrada (44-3, 28 KOs) took the spoils of the trilogy with Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (51-4, 41 KOs) in taking a twelve round majority decision for the WBC super flyweight title on Saturday night at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
In a closely contested encounter it brought debate amongst boxing fans of a winner but officially Estrada was adjudged to have done enough on two of the scorecards to win the third fight between the two combatants.
Estrada used movement in the early rounds to gain traction but Chocolatito came on strong midway through the middle rounds. Estrada adapted before changing tact to pull through in the championship rounds to win by scores of 114-114, 116-112, 115-113.
