Scoring one of boxing biggest upsets of recent times, WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol handed Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez a unanimous decision loss on Saturday night, winning by margins of 115-113 on all three scorecards at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“I proved myself today,” Bivol told DAZN’s Chris Mannix in the ring. “I’m the best in my [division]. I keep this belt. And thank you [to Canelo]. And sorry I broke your plans with Gennadiy Golovkin. Thank you to Canelo and his team. He’s a great champion.”

The opener witnessed Bivol use his most trusted weapon, the jab to offset the oncoming Canelo who whipped out the right hand with limited success.

The trend continued for the next couple of rounds but Canelo was finding success by closing the distance, most notably in the fourth where he landed a big uppercut to bring the Mexican crowd to their feet with excitement overriding anxiousness temporarily.

Unlike others who have wilted against the pressure of Canelo, Bivol turned the tables from the fifth onwards. Taking control of the contest, using his ring generalship mixed with his bigger size to push Alvarez back against the ropes to land some eye catching shots, the example of which could be seen by the redness on the face of Canelo.

Down the stretch and into the championship rounds, Bivol closed the show dominantly, Pushing the Mexican back and throwing multiple combinations to leave no element of doubt of a winner on the night.

“He’s a great champion,” said Alvarez “Sometimes in boxing, you win and you lose. I’m not gonna make excuses. I lost today and he won.”

Alvarez told reporters afterwards that he will exercise the contract clause of an immediate rematch saying “Of course I do,” Alvarez told Mannix when asked if he wanted a rematch. “This can’t end like this.”
