Well It wasn’t the ‘fight of the year’ we expected it to be due in large parts to the brilliance of Former four-divisional ruler Roman Gonzalez (51-3, 41 KOs) who dominated current WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez (18-2, 14 KOs) at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.

Martinez believed he could do what he has done to the majority of foes, attack with aggression but he was met with a completely different prospect in Gonzalez who returned fire with precision.

“My corner told me not to give him any rounds,” Gonzalez told ESPN afterwards “He was very courageous. He took a lot of punishment.”

It gets to the point where nothing surprises you in regard to Gonzalez but what does is the way in which the Nicaraguan can continue to go to the well to find youthful exuberance as he punished Martinez to win handily by scores of 118-110, 117-111, 116-112.

Next on Gonzalez’ wish list is Juan Francisco Estrada “Everyone knows that the last fight I had with ‘Gallo’ Estrada, I won,” Gonzalez said referring to the trilogy.

Featherweight Mauricio “Bronco” Lara (24-2-1, 17 KOs) was in the mood for a shootout with Emilio Sanchez (19-2 12 KOs) that witnessed both men rocked but ultimately one outgunned. Lara dropped Sanchez in the contests opener before underlining the result with a superb knockout in the third.

Lightweight Angel Fierro (19-1-2, 15 KOs) and Juan Carlos Burgos (34-6-3, 21 KOs) fought to a ten round majority draw. Scores were 96-94 Fierro, 95-95, 95-95.

Super welterweight Souleymane Cissokho (15-0, 9 KOs) remained unbeaten with a ten round unanimous decision over Roberto Valenzuela Jr (23-3, 19 KOs). Valenzuela dropped Cissokho but during the exchange was himself put on the canvas Cissokho. Scores were 100-90, 99-91, 99-91,

Unbeaten super middleweight Diego Pacheco (14-0, 11 KOs) scored a second round KO against Genc Pllana (9-4-1, 5 KOs).

Unbeaten lightweight Marc Castro (6-0, 5 KOs) for the first time in his career was knocked down and taken the distance but would ultimately win over the judges scorecards by 58-55 against Julio Madera (3-2, 2 KOs).
