Olympic Gold Medallist Lauren Price continues to add to her already impressive collection of achievements after being named BBC Wales Sports Personality of the year 2021.
The 27-Year-old from Ystrad Mynach toped the votes after becoming the first Welsh boxer in history to win an Olympic Gold Medal, beating the likes of Munkhbat Myagmarjargal, Atheyna Bylon, Nouchka Fontijn before toppling Li Qian in the final via a tally of 5-0.
Lauren said: ”This is a brilliant end to a fantastic year. I have wanted to go to the Olympics since the age of eight, so to finally get to do it and then go on to win gold was a dream come true.
“The support I have had from people in Wales has been amazing and to win this award, after all the great people that have gone before me, is a massive honour and very humbling.”
Her Grandfather Derek was a leading light in Lauren’s life but tragedy struck in 2020 when he sadly passed away. Price as dedicated both her Olympic Gold as well as the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award in his honour.
“I owe so much to my grandparents and I want to thank them for everything they have done for me. I would not have achieved anything without their love and support and this award is as much for them as for me. It is sad that my grandad is not here to see it but I am sure he is looking down on me and I know how proud he would have been of my Olympic gold and seeing me win this award.”
