WBO Welterweight king Terence “Bud” Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) left little doubt on his standing in the division hierarchy with the stoppage of former two-time welterweight champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter (31-4-1, 17 KOs) in the tenth round on Saturday night before 11,568 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The victory inevitably once more raises the question of the overall best within the division with Spence Jr also having shared the ring with Porter previously.

“He’s the best out of everybody I have been in the ring with, That man hit me with more than anybody I’ve been in the ring with.”

Shawn Porter on reflection of Crawford

The contest was competitive for the most part, Porter expectedly went straight at Crawford who used his jab to create space between the two fighters. An exchange between the two men in the third ended with Porter suffering a cut over his right eye courtesy of an accidental headbutt, although the action only acted to further spur on the challenger.

The pace intensified, Crawford exerted more pressure in a bid to back up Porter in the sixth but found himself on the receiving end in the eighth with an overhand right serving to keep the champion honest.

The ninth witnessed Crawford gain distance to use his jab more effectively, countering the movement of Porter in a round of dominance. Crawford had now hit full stride as he dropped Porter with a counter left hook in the tenth, the challenger as we knew he would, found his feet but hit the canvas again shortly after as Porter’s corner/father advised the stoppage.

The fallout of the contest revisited the topic of Errol Spence Jr who was in attendance but as time is called on Crawford’s promotional deal with Top Rank, he explained

“I’m pretty sure my decision is made already,” Crawford said, sitting next to Arum during the post-fight news conference. “Bob couldn’t secure me the Spence fight when I was with him, so how would he secure the fight when I’m not with him? I’m moving forward with my career right now and I wish everybody the best,”
