WBO super featherweight champion Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring (23-2, 11 KOs) produced a careers best performance in his sixth round stoppage win over Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs) on Saturday night at the Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai in Dubai, UAE.
Frampton tried in vein to take away the physical advantages of the champion who controlled the action behind a southpaw jab. Herring suffered a cut over his right eye in the fourth courtesy of a right hand from Frampton which momentarily halted the progress of the champion but Herring was quick to gain control, dropping Frampton in the fifth with a straight left, the end coming in the very next round from a brilliant uppercut before a rally that left the only course of action to be the towel being thrown in from the corner. Time was 1:40.
“I said before I would retire if I lost this fight and that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” a visibly emotional Frampton said in the ring.“I just want to dedicate my life to my family now. Boxing has been good to me, it’s also been bad to me.
“The last few years with these boys [trainers Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis], have been the best few years of my career.
“I just want to go home to my beautiful wife and kids and that’s it.”
On the fight itself, Frampton said: “I just got beat by the better man. I really struggled to get inside him. He is sharp-shooting, from a distance, and had a perfect game plan. Zero excuses.”
“It was an emotional rollercoaster just to get here” said Herring “People doubted me, they called me every name in the book but, even with the cut, I wasn’t going to quit”
“Carl Frampton has been a tremendous champion. I have been a fan since day one. It is tough to see any veteran go out like that, I am glad he is able to walk out on his two feet. It has been a great night.”
The Plaudit came raining in for the two weight world champion who steps away from the sport with a record of (28-3, 16KOs).
Yes, this probably the biggest victory of my career, but i just want for everyone to pray and show love for @RealCFrampton. I’ll always be a fan, and he’s a true gentleman. God bless you, my man. Please make it home safely to your beautiful family.
