WBC super featherweight champion Miguel “Alacrán” Berchelt (38-1, 34 KOs) did what was expected of him by stopping Eleazar “Tronco” Valenzuela (21-14-4, 16 KOs) in a non-title bout on Saturday night at TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City.
Despite finding himself on the canvas in the opener, the challenger Valenzuela showed courage in making it to the sixth round before he finally succumbed to the non-stop assault of the champion.
Talk of a fight with Oscar Valdez continues to intensify coming a step closer to the conclusion should Valdez make it through his first fight back in July.
“Now what follows is the expected fight against Oscar Valdez,” Berchelt said afterwards. “Every fan wants to see that fight, and we are ready for that war.
“I felt great, but the altitude in Mexico City hit me a little bit. It is not easy to fight in Mexico City, but thank God we got the victory. Eleazar is a tough fighter. He endured everything I threw at him. He gained my respect. My experience as world champion pushed me forward.”
Unbeaten junior welterweight Omar “Pollo” Aguilar (18-0, 17 KOs) made quick work of Dante “Crazy” Jardon (32-7, 23 KOs). A barrage of punches ended proceedings just seconds in.
Junior welterweight David Picasso (14-1, 5 KOs) outpointed Florentino “Violento” Pérez (14-6-2, 9 KOs) over eight rounds. Scores were 78-74, 79-73, 79-74, 80-72, 80-72, 80-72
