Gervonta “Tank” Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) was crowned the WBA lightweight champion on Saturday night, scoring a twelfth round stoppage of #2 Yuriorkis “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” Gamboa (30-3, 18 KOs) at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
Davis in a rush to show his dominance, dropped Gamboa in the second, an action which reportedly left Gamboa with an injury to his Achilles tendon. Nevertheless the Cuban continued, albeit with his mobility impaired, landed some solid shots of his own.
Davis was not to be denied on this night though, scoring another knockdown in the eighth to extend the margins on the judges scorecards.
In the final round both men tried to close the contest strongly, only one managing the feat, Davis for the third time dropped Gamboa in the final round to end matters. Time 1:17.
Davis made his intentions abundantly clear telling media “I’m the top dog and as you know there’s no safety on this block so bring ‘em on,”
Scores at the time of stoppage were 109-98, 109-97, 108-98.
