Former middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (36-3, 30 KOs) made his move to the Super Middleweight division a successful one with the fifth round stoppage of former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (51-4-1, 33 KOs) on Friday night at the Talking Stick Resort Arena, Phoenix, Arizona.
Jacobs punished Chavez for the five rounds the bout lasted with a bloodied Chavez retiring on his stool with a reported broken nose.
The undercard featured a clash between two of the flyweight’s premier fighters in a clash for the vacant WBC flyweight title. Julio Cesar “El Rey” Martinez (15-1, 12 KOs) was the man crowned, scoring a ninth round TKO over former world champion Cristofer “El Latigo” Rosales (29-5, 20 KOs)
Martinez was not to be denied, breaking down the resistance of Rosales until the fight was mercifully waved off.
Former jr welterweight world champion ”Mighty Mo” Maurice Hooker (27-1-3, 18 KOs) scored a first round KO over late sub Uriel Perez (19-5, 17 KOs)
Former world champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (29-2-1, 16 KOs) scored a ten round unanimous decision over Roberto “Amenaza” Garcia (42-5, 25 KOs). Smith took the judges scorecard by scores of 99-91, 99-91, 98-92.
