James Mulvihill is not a familiar name to many in British boxing. The Wythenshawe upstart is one of the newest faces on the Manchester boxing scene and has joined the team of middleweight contender Jimmy Kelly Jnr in a management capacity alongside promoter Greg Cohen and advisor Andre Rozier and his Havoc Athletics led team.
Mulvihill, a successful businessman and a mainstay of the Wythenshawe community for decades, linked up with Kelly Jnr earlier this year and he discussed how the link up with Kelly Jnr came about.
Mulvihill said, “Boxing can be a tough game. I have seen fighters over the years just get used and abused and it’s not something I like to see. It’s heartbreaking to see fighters who work so hard in the gym day in day out leave the game with nothing. I decided I wanted to do something about it.
“I’ve known Jimmy Kelly Jnr since we were both kids and I’ve always wanted to help people in Wythenshawe. I’ve always admired Jimmy as a fighter and as a human being, so when I saw he wasn’t getting the fights and the paydays I believe he should have been getting, I decided to step in and do something about it and assemble a team that can give Jimmy the opportunities he deserves, and we have managed to do that.
Mulvihill continued, “Linking up with Anthony Farnell and Andre Rozier’s Havoc Management alongside their Media and PR wing has really helped Jimmy get back into the limelight which culminated in a deal being signed with a top-class US promoter in Greg Cohen which will allow Jimmy to get the opportunities he thoroughly deserves.”
It was recently announced that Kelly Jnr had signed a multi-year deal with stateside outfit Greg Cohen Promotions and Mulvihill gave his take on what lies ahead for Kelly Jnr in a buzzing middleweight division.
He said, “The middleweight division is on fire at the moment. If circumstances were different a couple of years back it could have been Jimmy fighting Charlo in December and not Dennis Hogan, but I believe Jimmy will get his shot at the world title within the next 12 to 18 months. Jimmy will be fighting in the USA in the next couple of months that is something I can confirms
“I would like Jimmy to fight a top 10 contender within the next 6 months. I believe that he would take the fight to the likes of the WBA Champion Murata given the opportunity. A fight with Robert Brant who I believe is a top-class talent would be one I would love for Jimmy. It would be a hard fight, but one I firmly believe would be exciting and one I believe that Jimmy could win. We will have to wait and see but what I can say is the future is exciting for Jimmy Kelly Jnr.”
