WBA Bantamweight Naoya Inoue (19-0, 16 KOs) unified and crowned himself the World Boxing Super Series King in defeat of IBF champion Nonito Donaire (40-6, 26 KOs) on Thursday at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
Inoue was made to go the distance for the first time in a nine fight stretch as Donaire turned in a vintage performance to take the 26 year-old the full twelve rounds in losing a unanimous decision.
Donaire shocked us all with the display, opening a cut above Inoue’s eye in the second before giving fight fans a performance that will go down as one of this years best.
The two traded punches throughout, the highlight being Donaire uncorking a vicious counter in the ninth to leave the ‘Monster’ reeling with blood trickling from the nose of the Pound 4 Pound star.
The tide looked to be turning in favour of the Filipino but Inoue kept his composure, sticking to the gameplan he was able to land a HUGE body shot in the eleventh to drop the four divisional champ as the balance of power was restored.
Donaire proved once more his warriors heart for battle returned to his feet somehow, surviving the follow up assault in the final round to achive what many fail to do, stay upright as 20,000 spectators found thier feet in appreciation. scores were 117-109, 116-111, 114-113.
