Four Weight boxing legend Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker was killed on Sunday Night after he was hit by a car in Virginia Beach.
Officials received a call around 10:04 PM in response to an accident at the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road.
Police arrived at the scene to find the man had been hit by a vehicle and was in a really bad shape with sources close to the situation naming the man as Pernell Whitaker.
Whitaker would later succumb to his injuries and pass away aged 55.
The news will come as devastation to the boxing community, who acknowledge Whitaker as one of the greatest defensive technicians the sport as ever witnessed.
Whitaker cemented his legacy winning titles at lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight before being eventually inducted in to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006.
At the time of his retirement the Gold Medalist from the 1984 Olympics amassed a professional record that read 40-4-1.
Whitaker was married to Rovanda Anthony in 1985 but the couple later divorced. He leaves behind four children Dominique, Dantavious, Devon and Tiara
