Long Island lightweight Alex Vargas has enjoyed a solid start to his professional career, as he notched up 3 wins in his opening 3 contests with 2 coming inside the scheduled distance. ‘El Toro’ has also linked up with famed New York trainer Andre Rozier and his Havoc Camp after impressing Rozier whilst sparring IBF world lightweight champion Richard Commey.
Vargas discussed sparring Commey and how his link up with Rozier came about. He said, “I was asked to spar Richard Commey prior to his fight with Isa Chaniev. The sparring for that fight was unbelievable; Richard is as strong as what his record suggests but he can box as well. It was great work and I was very grateful to be part of his camp.
“After the sparring, myself and Andre discussed me training with the Havoc team and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I still work with my father and we have a great team. Everything works really well, and everybody works together which is making me a much better fighter.”
Vargas, who still works in his local steak house despite holding down a professional career, has amassed a 3-0 record since turning professional. Vargas made the transition to the professional ranks after narrowly losing out to the highly-rated Reshad Mati in the final of the Golden Gloves.
The New York native opened up on his amateur career and his future plans in the professional ranks.
Vargas said, “I had an okay amateur career I got to the finals in the Golden Gloves and boxed a lot of top-quality fighters and won a couple of titles, but I’ve always believed I would be better suited to the professional style and I believe with Andre Rozier and the team I am going to develop as a professional to the extent I can go all the way in this sport.
“I’m waiting on a date which should be confirmed shortly but I always have great support which I am so grateful for. I want to continue progressing like I am and show off the improvements that I believe I have gained. I want to prove that I am going to be a fighter that you are going to see on your TV screens for years to come.”
