Former unified flyweight champion Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada (39-3, 26 KOs) was successful in his dethronement of WBC super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (47-5-1, 41 KOs) on Friday night, scoring a majority decision at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
Estrada once again came out of the blocks the quicker of the two men, winning rounds whilst Rungvisai took a while to get going much to his detriment.
Estrada was sharp, scoring with a multiple of shots that the champion had trouble defending against through the earlier parts of the round.
Rungvisai much like the first encounter between the two did manage to find some footing in the bout as he started to close the gap on the scorecards but this time unlike the last, Estrada was able to stand his ground, while still outscoring the now former champion by scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 115-113.
In one of this year’s best contests, WBA super bantamweight champ Daniel Roman (27-2-1, 10KO) seized the IBF title that TJ Doheny (21-1, 15KO) had in his possession via majority decision.
In a back and forth war that was waged between the two, Roman was able to score a knockdown in the second with a left hook dropping the Irish born-Australian resident to light the touchpaper that left us all on the edge of our seats.
Doheny played his part brilliantly in an enthralling contest, enjoying a big round eight to stagger Roman but the Californian came back with vengeance in the latter part of the contest, dropping Doheny again in the eleventh with an uppercut to the body.
Doheny showed grit and determination to make it through the round but was soundly beaten on two of the three judges scorecards by 116-110 whilst the other somehow had the contest a draw at 113-113.
