By Lee Thornton – On April 25th, 2019 In California boxing fans will be treated to a highly intriguing rematch between Yves Ulysse Jr & Steve Claggett, two exciting Canadian boxers with very different styles.
Claggett is a very aggressive fighter who works his jab constantly and loves to pressure his opponents, relying heavily on his high guard defensively to avoid punches.
Ulysse Jr alternatively displays blazing hand speed along with excellent power in his right hand, movement and defense are a key component of Ulysse Jr’s skills also.
Looking back on the first fight between these two, Claggett was the aggressor throughout the fight working his jab along with a steady body attack. Ulysse Jr landed some vicious right hands along with good combinations and used lateral movement at times to avoid Claggett’s steady attack.
The decision was controversial with Claggett winning a split decision over the highly skilled Ulysse Jr. However looking back at the fight in my opinion I felt that Ulysse Jr landed the better punches of the two and wasn’t given the correct credit for his defensive skills. Many of the shots Claggett landed were partially blocked or didn’t even land at all, on inside Ulysse Jr was slipping punches that the judges scored for Claggett.
Since their last encounter Ulysse Jr has scored three very impressive victories while Claggett has a loss and draw with the talented Mathieu Germain in a great fight.
I favour Ulysse Jr in the rematch I feel he holds many advantages in this fight including hand speed, power and defense, Claggett on the other hand will have an advantage in the conditioning aspect and is the better in-fighter.
My prediction for this fight is that Yves Ulysse Jr wins a unanimous decision and gains a new group of American fans after observing the skills the Canadian fight fans have been lucky enough to see for years.
