Boxing News

By Dennis DodgeIt’s nearly Christmas time and the decorations are up, the wallets empty and as per normal I’ve got a lot of stuff to get off my chest as it seems the stupid has been strong the last month from boxers, to fans to commentators. So Merry Christmas to any readers and here’s hoping we all get what we want. (Although I’m pretty sure decent judges would be a miracle in itself.)

Looks like Amir Khan has decided that it’s time to let his mouth do the talking instead of his fists, for what must be the umpteenth time he seems to have called out Manny Pacquiao as the fight that everyone wants (despite the roars for him vs Kell Brook), as that seems to have zoomed past anyone remotely interested in boxing he’s now brought up Brooks possible sexuality in a serious ‘who gives a shit’ interview. At this point I have no idea what it’s meant to do, make him so derided that nobody will pay to see him face Brook or try and embarrass Brook enough so he goes into hiding (although why he thinks that would happen in this day and age is beyond me). Khan is in serious danger of becoming a complete laughing stock and erasing the fact that there used to be a quite decent boxer under all the bluster.

Rocky Fielding has just had his butt handed to him in a complete mismatch with Canelo Alverez, now normally I’d moan like heck about the fact it was a mismatch but Rocky was the champion and should actually be lauded for facing a very dangerous opponent regardless of the result. As fans we do enough moaning about champions facing sub-par opposition so can’t really complain about this one, what I will bitch about is commentary again, it’s about time we had neutral commentary for every fight, I can see with my own eyes when someone’s outclassed so don’t’ try and tell me it was close/competitive or anything else.

Mismatch after mismatch after mismatch on god damn Pay Per Views, I’m paying extra on top of my sky/bt/espn whatever other way we’re being fleeced to watch other sports that I don’t want to see anyone against a journeyman, every fight should be 50/50 and if your going to put someone up against one at least don’t call the bloody thing off so early because he/she might just upset the applecart.

Josh Warrington for making me a believer, I have constantly said the guy is not good enough, doesn’t have enough power etc etc. I should know better but I’ve written him off time and time again. Brilliant performance against Selby and another against Frampton, put him in with Joshua and he’d probably smash it (okay I jest). Brilliant little fighter and shows everyone you don’t need massive power (or power at all) to make it in this great sport of ours.

And as always, judges, why they don’t have to explain their scoring is baffling. The sport seems to be suffering a lot lately with accusations of fix being thrown around social media quite often, have a judge explain his decision (especially on a disputed result) and quite possibly show they were just a bit of a numpty rather than corrupt.

Well that’s me for the rest of the year now, hopefully I’ll be back in the new year with at least an article a month but as per normal who knows.

Merry Christmas one and all (except All of the boxing boards, they can piss off) and hope you get everything you want as long as it isn’t more bloody belts.
