It wasn’t the explosive contest that some of us expected but WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (15-0, 11 KOs) showed that he has much more than a big right hand, going the full twelve rounds in scoring a unanimous decision over former champ Jean Pascal (33-6-1, 20 KOs) on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.
“Of course, every time we shoot for the knockout but sometimes you can’t [get it],” Bivol said afterwards. “I can show my boxing skills. I hope people are glad after my fight. I think [Pascal] put all of his experience and power into this fight.”
From Start to finish Bivol was in control of the contest with Pascal not offering much resistance, mirrored further according to CompuBox punch statistics, Bivol landed 217 of 678 shots (32 per cent), while Pascal connected with only 60 of 357 blows (17 per cent).
In the end, it was far from a classic to send HBO Boxing on it’s way but once again showed the many skills of the Russian who is ready a bigger challenge in his attempts to unify the division, when asked who he wanted next he simply said:
“Doesn’t matter to me. I’ll fight anybody, I am ready to fight against Alvarez or Kovalev or Badou Jack. I’m ready. Let’s make the fight.”
