Reports are circulating that IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr (24-0, 21 KOs) will face Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30 KOs) on either February 16th or 23rd in Texas.
The Ring Magazine broke the news that Garcia is willing to jump from 135 lbs to 147 lbs as opposed to facing Richard Commey. it seems that the opportunity to win a fifth divisional title is too good to turn down.
Garcia was last seen in a boxing ring defeating former world champion Robert Easter jr in July to unify two of the four titles at lightweight whilst Errol Spence Jr hasnt fought since annihilating his mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo back in June.
Spence is considered the best Welterweight meaning that this is a bold move from Garcia, one which has often found fighters wanting, most recently Kell Brook’s challenge of Gennady Golovkin, Amir Khan’s attempt against Saul Alvarez and who could foregt Guillermo Rigondeaux unsuccessful attempt in his stoppage loss to Vasyl Lomachenko.
If he was to win the unattached fighter could virtually write his own cheque as the promoters continue to circle in a bid to sign one of boxings best.
