WBO Junior Middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (30-0, 25 KOs) made the successful defence of his title last night, getting past a spirited effort from Liam “Beefy” Smith (26-2-1, 14 KOs) on his way to a unanimous decision win at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Smith started the contest well but Munguia was able to soon find his rhythm by the fourth. The big difference in the bout was the power which was evidently in favour of the Mexican who made it count in the sixth courtesy of the left hook that dropped Smith.
Smith gave a good account of himself the rest of the way but Munguia had too much for the former champion as he recorded scores of 116-111, 119-110, 119-108.
