Boxing News

By Dennis Dodge – Back and grouchier than ever, that’s me in a nutshell. It’s been a good few months and I really should be smiling all the time but boxing still has that capacity to send me into a rage at the slightest hint of the bullshit it often spawns.

The Canelo/GGG situation is the biggest at the moment, now unlike most I didn’t see the first fight as a massive robbery and had Canelo by 1, I wouldn’t have gone mad if it had gone either way but the way some people were talking, it was as if Paul Butler would have been handed the nod over the weekend. I stuck up for the Mexican on many a forum and in many a discussion but then he had to ruin it by apparently eating tainted meat, I mean seriously if there’s a problem where your staying, you’ve got enough money to get it shipped in, also are you really serious when you think the boxing public is going to buy it, plus the fact the WBC gave you the lightest sanctions possible, it’s just infuriating especially with the tint that hangs around the sport as a matter of course and sends no message to any up and comers not to do it. Sporting bodies, get your houses in order and start actively stamping any drugs out of the sport. Make the athletes, manager AND promoters responsible for what’s going on. I can’t say for definite that there’s a drug problem in the sport but I do believe there’s a lax policy regarding it.

Anyone watch the Haye/Bellew fight at the weekend? If you didn’t you missed a corker as the supreme underdog came out on top and in all honesty embarrassed ex HW champ Haye, brilliant, lets lay it to rest give Bellew a pat on the back (c’mon you know his skill is underrated) and move on, but no, you have to drag up an imagined injury to Haye, the shot Haye theory (a genuine point but didn’t you say beforehand even a super shot Haye would smash the mouthy scouser). Give Bellew his due, a pat on the back and let him ride off into the sunset knowing he squeezed the absolute maximum out of the (again, criminally underrated) skill. Yes, it’s grinding to know he’s headline multiple PPV’s but that’s not his fault, it’s ours, we bought the crap (and continued to do so) and with buying turds like Khan vs Prescott, Haye Vs Audley which opened the market up and shown that people could earn more through PPV if they could sell it to the crowd and Bomber was always good at that. You complain that boxings a business to the boxers and the promoters now but if we continue to line their pockets they’ll continue to do it (and yes, I got the PPV so I know it’s pot calling the kettle black but at this point, I’m not moaning about that).

Another thing on the Haye card, did you watch the Martin J Ward bout? I had half an ear and eye on it as I thought Ward was going walk it but then JT started to come back, also I had to do a double take when I heard he’d turned down a WORLD title shot??? I’m not bothered which it was for, surely if it comes your way you should snatch it with both hands. Everyone knows you’re a bit green and will be the underdog so unless you capitulate absolutely then your profile is going to rise. As Coach Kieran Farrell says ‘you’ve got to be ready 24/7 because you never know when that opportunity will arise again’. Take that chance and you could be opening the door, turn it down and you could end up as a could have been or even a has been.

And my biggest moan for a while is with regards to coaching, if I’m your coach then listen to what I’m saying, I don’t want you to embarrass yourself (or me) when it comes time for you to throw down, I’m trying to teach you to be better, I don’t care if your Mum, Dad, Doctor, next door neighbour tells you your right. You don’t have to be coached by me, there’s a number of gyms around, hell there’s a number of coaches in the gym you can request. I won’t hold it against you, in fact I’d rather you did one as then I can concentrate on the guys and gals that want to learn the basics. (Not you under 10’s you can do what you want as it’s a bit of fun and a good way to keep fit).

Oh, just thought of another one, why can I write a throwaway article that seems to get a lot more views than the one I did that spent me 2 weeks to construct properly (thanks for the patience Cello), it doesn’t mean I’m going to stop my unsung heroes bit (Danny Connor’s up next) but just perplexes me, is my writing really better when I spend half an hour writing crap up?

And lastly, why can I not keep to a schedule with my writing, I’m supposed to get something out once a week or at least once a month but I can’t keep that up and then bang 4 out over the course of a few days??? I’ve got numerous half written stuff done (amateurs, judging, rule changes, interview ideas) but I struggle to keep it going if I stop for a day. If I didn’t enjoy boxing so much then I wouldn’t bother with it but it still means it doesn’t piss me off.

Until the next time I’m fit to burst, enjoy the most frustrating sport in the world
