The bubble burst on any suggestions of Felix Verdejo becoming Puerto Rico’s next superstar on Saturday night, suggestion beforehand from some that he was the second coming of the great Felix Trinidad, instead, it finds me comparing him to another PR star in Juan Manuel Lopez, not a bad thing but ultimately not as great as we thought him to potentially be.
Props to Antonio Lozada Jr for putting that thought process in our heads, the skilled 38-2 fighter who hails from Tijuana was expectantly, behind on our scorecard but kept to his task, chipping away before finding the antidote to the danger that Verdejo possessed, dropping his man to record the biggest scalp of his record to date in the tenth round.
It came as quite the surprise, Verdejo was highlighted by many to be a future star, I know what your thinking, this could be a one-off like Jay Z stated in one of his rhymes, a loss isn’t a loss, Its a lesson. If that’s the case then perhaps Verdejo needs to go back to the drawing board, take a good long look at himself and ask the tough questions.
Anyways this isn’t about Verdejo but more so Antonio Lozada, a fighter who we give little credence to his claims that he would cause the upset, he made believers out of us all this past weekend.
Heavyweight Joy Joyce was the winner of our latest poll on Twitter for fighter of the week, he dispatched 6’10 Donnie Palmer with ease, needing just 38 seconds to record his third professional win with confidence oozing he immediately set his sights on an intriguing matchup with Dereck Chisora.
The David Haye guided fighter looks the real deal, taking his amateur exploits over to the paid ranks with the look of a fighter who after less than a handful of fights is ready to throw his hat in the ring for a shot at some of the divisions best.
This weekend wasn’t the hectic one of the last few but was enough to satisfy even the most difficult of critics.
This coming weekend hosts more meaty encounters, one shining out most is the heavyweight tussle between the UK’s Dillian Whyte who will take on former world champion Lucas Browne, did I hear anyone say ‘Bombs Away?’
As well as the aforementioned matchup, we also have the Lightweight contest of Lewis Ritson who will face Scott Cardle and Frank Buglioni Vs. Callum Johnson which is sure to keep the UK audience interacted
Until next week, this wraps up the latest addition to #FOTW.
