By Dennis Dodge – Well the first thing that’s really annoyed me over the last month is that I haven’t kept my promise and wrote a new article every other week (this is my 1st this month but will be followed up with another one straight away). I’ve got a bunch of ideas, half written articles and a structure but my head decided to do one of its ‘you’re a piece of shit’ moments that lasted a while so I’ve finished nothing. I’m back for now though so we’ll see how we go.
How disappointing was the super match between Rigo and Lomo? It annoyed me first off, that it wasn’t picked up by any news stations in the UK really, and that a fight of this magnitude wasn’t splashed everywhere. A half written article went more into this but maybe my head was right, as the fight itself turned into a massive damp squib as Lomo was too big and too slick for the plucky Cuban who pulled out in the 6th citing an injured hand. Articles, Memes and the usual jokes followed but in my humble opinion, Lomo was just too big and Rigo was on a hiding to nothing.
Alas, if this is Rigo’s last fight, he’ll sail away into the sunset as a footnote instead of as the great boxer he was. Every man and his dog avoided him with Frampton’s team and Quiggs (if memory serves correctly) both stated they wouldn’t face him as they had nothing to gain. It’s a massive shame but is how the popularity contest called boxing is run.
What is wrong with people taking pot shots at Journeymen (a term I hate) in the sport. The last few weeks saw Referee NAME_______ slag them off and whilst some jumped on him straight away, there were others that were defending him. As a respected referee his words can only do harm to those men and women across the world that can’t sell the tickets, so have to take their talent on the road. Everyone knows you’re a point or 2 down in that away corner, and that even a draw is seen as a plus by the away team. This is not and never has been the journeyman’s fault but more so the way boxing is run. You’d need a major overhaul to get over this, and an agreement to be between all promoters to abide by. Personally, I think fighters shouldn’t be responsible for tickets and it should be a 35/35 split with the rest going to the winner, but having discussed it at length with those ‘in the game’ this is never going to happen.
Mayweather being mentioned whilst Amir Khan was in the jungle, that fight is dead and buried. Stop mentioning it and let Khan move on to other opponents. No matter what you think of the whole debacle, it’s time to drop it and see if Khan can cement a legacy going into what could be the twilight years of his career.
Paying for Sky whilst knowing all the big fights will be on PPV, we’ve just got sky sports again to watch the rugby and the darts (plus the lad wants to watch Arsenal, I keep my eye out for Derby and the missus won’t miss Fulham), it’s great for that but I know I’ll bitch like fuck the next time Joshua etc is all is on Box office again.
And finally, my biggest moan, for now, is if your coach tells you to do something then just do it, especially if more than one tells you. It’s to help you, nothing more, nothing less.
On the plus side, my head is starting to be a bit clearer, I’m enjoying boxing more than ever (seriously I am), and when I sit down to it I’m really enjoying my writing. The new year is going to bring some greater things and I love Christmas.
Merry Christmas to one and all and make sure you have a good one.
