Cardiff’s Jamie ‘JJ’ Evans is all set for his sixth professional contest this Thursday evening in London.

Evans looks to continue to build on his impressive amateur pedigree which saw him become a multi-time Welsh Amateur Champion along with representing Wales at the World and European Championships. Evans now under the guidance of Darren Wilson is looking for title contests in the future, however, his initial focus at the moment in this coming Thursday night at Mayfair’s Sheraton Grand Park Hotel. The 21-year-old opened up about how training had gone ahead of his sixth professional outing, and how he had adjusted to the professional ranks.

Evans said, “I’m really enjoying being a professional. The pro-style suits me a lot more. The training is harder but I have a great coach in Darren who is a good friend too. So I am really enjoying life in the pro ranks.

“I’ve had a really long camp for this fight so I’m expecting the best performance of my pro career so far.”

Evans has been campaigning at Super Welterweight since entering the paid ranks. At 21, Evans has a long career ahead and lots of options, which may include a move up or down in weight. ‘JJ’ elaborated on his plans for the post-Thursday evening.

Evans stated, “I want to fight for the Welsh title as soon as possible. I think I’m ready for that step up.

“I have a great management team in the Sanigar’s and a great trainer in Darren Wilson. They pick who I fight and I just do the fighting.

The Welshman continued, “I think I could maybe do Welterweight now and I may end up moving up as I’m only 21 so I’ll continue to grow.

“The dream is to become British Champion, anything more than that is a bonus. I’m realistic but I think I have it in me to become British Champion.”

Trainer Darren Wilson, who is well known for working with Nathan Cleverly, gave his take on his young prodigy.

Wilson said, “Jamie was a very good amateur, and is developing fight by fight into a very good pro fighter.

“I’ve taken him around a load of gyms to spar some top boys including, Liam Williams, Tony Dixon and he has done rounds with Nathan Cleverly ahead of the Brahmer fight.

“I’m looking forward to his first 6 round this week; we can get that out of the way and then push on up the ranking and keep progressing.

“Jamie is only 21 and has time on his hands and I’m very excited to see what the future holds for him as I think he has all the tools to go to the top for sure.”
