BY Dennis Dodge – As I’ve noticed lately I seem to have a hell of a lot to moan about in regards to this great sport we all claim to love figured I’d pool them all in one article to peruse at your leisure.
First, up is Judging, anyone that read my last article knows that this has become a bugbear but I’m still awaiting any answers as to why the governing bodies don’t have a set rulebook for judging nor any guidelines on how to pick judges? It creates massive controversy that does untold harm to the sport in the long run, why can’t you get together sort this fallacy out and let us get back to moaning about the 637 belts per division.
Stoppages reared it’s head again at the weekend as Joshua/Takam was stopped far too early with a ref that seemed to be looking for any excuse to end it. Now that was bad enough (should we have a rule where if the ref realises he’s made a mistake, he administers a standing 8 and the bout carries on?) but there’s been a bunch of guff posted all around the internet about how it ruined the fight and Eddie Hearn (forever referred to as Mr Hearn from now on) has ruined boxing as it was a fix or some other such nonsense. Joshua was miles in front, looked in control the whole way out and no, not in a million years was he close to gassing or looking like he’d be troubled. An early stoppage, definitely. Changed the outcome – not on your Nellie.
Stop using the word Casuals as a bleeding insult, just because someone else doesn’t feel the need to research boxers from the 1400’s and follow boxers from the start of their career does not mean they don’t have as much right to an opinion as some of the more learned amongst us (not me, I’m a Cash through and through :-), without those that tune in every once in a while the sport would be nowhere near what it is and you’d be lamenting why no one tunes in anymore. By all means, educate people on what you know and debate their opinion but don’t give them shit just cause they have an opinion that differs from you and you somehow believe your better than they are, it makes you look a twat really. (Unless it’s to do with Joshua/Takam then just take my word for it).
PPV’s are really starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel now, we’ve got Bellew/Haye 2 coming in December and unless that undercard is fantastic then is it really PPV worthy, I know some will buy it but seriously Mr Hearn at least give us something to justify this to our MMA loving buddies.
And lastly or I’ll never have anything to moan about again Commentators, I know you have a job too big up the ‘home’ fighters but if you ignore everything the opponent does then is it really any great deal when the home fighter wins? This became apparent during Katie Taylors fantastic win to become world champion this weekend, She admitted herself it wasn’t her greatest performance and there were some rudimentary errors that she doesn’t normally make. Listening to the commentators though, it was the best performance ever and if you’d never seen her before you’d wonder what the hell they were talking about, never mind how Anahi Sanchez ever made it as a champion as they never mentioned her good work.
Aaaaargh that feels better, will be back soon with a focused article but hope your all having some fun. Keep your eye out for Kieran Farrell’s upcoming shows at Bowlers and Eccles Amateur show on the 18th Nov, you never know you might get the privilege of getting me a beer.
