The two fighters have an excellent opportunity to face Oleksandr Usyk in the semi-finals of the World Super Series Boxing tournament.
Mairis Breidis is a strong favourite going into the bout. He has the power that can knockout heavyweights, boxing ability, a good Jab and positive momentum (new WBC champion).
Mike Perez has been very inactive, 1 round in 2 years and has come down from heavyweight. He’s lost a lot of weight which may affect his punch resistance which was very good at heavyweight despite the first round KO defeat to Povetkin, in which he drank a lot of whiskey before the fight (yes before).
Perez has good boxing ability (narrowly lost to the talented Bryant Jennings and scored a draw with fringe contender Carlos Takam). He wasn’t a power puncher at heavyweight but his power could be increased at cruiserweight, although Breidis has already fought at heavyweight, viscously knocking out Manuel Charr, so he may be accustomed to the type of power Perez may carry down.
The safe bet would be Breidis outright as the punch resistance of Perez at cruiserweight is unknown currently. On the other hand, the value bet would be Perez on points.
