We’ve all had a bad day at the office, one judge in particular will be feeling that way this morning when a mix up of fighters rendered a split decision much to the amazement of all.
Unbeaten IBF #10 bantamweight Ryan Burnett (17-0, 9 KOs) dethroned previous Champion Lee Haskins (34-4, 14 KOs) via a twelve round split decision by scores of 119-107, 119-107 for Burnett, while an astounding 118-108 was turned in by Clark Sammartino.
Burnett seized his chance in his maiden voyage at world level, taking the fight to Haskins who struggled to get a foothold in the bout. Burnett fighting on home soil at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, looked to replicate the title winning exploits of his countryman Carl Frampton, doing so by dropping Haskins in the sixth and eleven on route to a performance of brilliance.
Matchroom Promoter Eddie Hearn commented afterwards on the terrible scoring from the one judge saying “He scored two 10-8 rounds to Haskins! His scorecard was excellent: it was just the wrong way around. He’s 80-odd. I’ve never seen anything like it. I presume the split decision will be revoked. It’ll be a unanimous decision, it must be.”
