Fight Report from Ringside by Joe Chavez
Last night was the debut of Golden Boy Promotions fight nights on ESPN at Fantasy Springs Casino Resort in Indio Ca.
In the main event, Jason Quigley outlasted an always tough and game Glen Tapia.
Quigley may have won by a unanimous decision from the judge’s but Tapia (23-4, 15 KOs) didn’t make it easy on him as they both slugged it out, much to the delight of a packed house.
Quigley got off to a great start, constantly landing big shots but as the fight went into the later rounds Tapia started to land some of his own power shots
The fighting Irishman, in the end, was too much for the veteran Tapia. the win takes Quigley’s record to (13-0, 10 KOs) going the distance to remain undefeated
In the co-main event, the hometown favourite and former bantamweight titleholder Randy Caballero had a tough nights work whilst having to slug it out with Jesus Ruiz of Mexico.
Caballero was coming off over a year’s layoff and it showed as he had some problems with the tough Ruiz.
Jesus Ruiz took this fight on short notice but it was clear that he came to fight! Caballero however was able to use his quicker hand speed to neutralise Ruiz and generally outlast him to win by unanimous decision.
Riversides Mauricio Herrera was also showcased on the undercard, looking to rebound from a two fight losing streak. He was clearly far superior to his opponent Hector Velazquez of Mexico
The veteran Herrera now (27-7, 7 Kos) looks once more to climb back up a deep welterweight ladder and this fight was a good kickstart for him.
Also notable undercards were Hector Tanajara Jr who had to get off the canvas to secure victory over a spirited effort from Daniel Perales (10-9-1, 5 KOs) and also making her professional debut was 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist, flyweight Marlen Esparza from Houston TX who showed the divide in skill, outpointing Rachel Sazoff (0-3) to win a five round decision on the judges scorecards.
